For decades auto manufacturers and drivers have dreamed of cars that could be powered by a fuel that was easy and inexpensive to acquire, and would not produce any form of toxic or eco-unfriendly emissions. One of these forms of fuel has long been thought to be the use of the hydrogen fuel cell, something that Toyota has been experimenting with since the early 1990s. In the time since those early days Toyota has developed and tested a number of hydrogen fuel cells and vehicles that have been powered by them. In all over one million miles of road testing has been completed leading to the development of the Toyota Mirai a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle. In a recent announcement, Toyota stated that by 2017 production of this vehicle would reach 3,000 cars to meet the increasing demand in this futuristic vehicle since it was first introduced in Japan.

Increasing Production Levels

In 2014 Toyota managed to hold onto its title as being the World’s Largest Automobile Manufacturer for the third year in a row. As part of this continued effort to maintain not only such high levels of production, but of innovation as well, Toyota announced that it would be producing 2,000 hydrogen powered Mirais for the 2016 model year. This is three times the number of these cars produced for the 2015 model year. As of January 22, 2015 Toyota stated they had already received 1,500 orders for this amazing vehicle. According to the manufacturer, they had only anticipated a sales target of no more than 400 cars for the 2015 model years and are amazed at the hot reception these cars have seen here in the U.S. As such Toyota has put plans in place to increase production of these zero-emission cars for both the European and U.S. market in the coming year. A Word about Toyota Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Vehicles

The Mirai will feature Toyota Fuel Cell System (FTCS) that combines the latest in fuel cell and hybrid technology to produce a vehicle that offers clean emissions that are free of CO and CO2. In fact the only emissions that emanate from the tailpipe is water or H2O. The Mirai uses a combination of proprietary components developed by Toyota including the Fuel Cell stack, the Fuel Cell boost converter, and one or more high pressure hydrogen tanks. With this combination, the Mirai is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 9.0 seconds and can accelerate from 25 to 40 mph for passing in no more than 3 seconds. All of this can be accomplished at energy efficiency ratings far better than a comparable internal combustion powered vehicle. It should take you no more than 3 to 5 minutes to fuel up and you will be able to drive up to 300 miles before you need to refuel.

Parts of the Whole

Every aspect of the Toyota Mirai has been developed with your safety in mind starting with the carbon fiber fuel tank itself. Made of the highest quality carbon fiber, this tank is not only exceptionally lightweight, it is amazingly solid and durable. From this fuel tank the hydrogen is combined with air sucked in through intake vents hiding behind the grille and sent to the fuel cell stack. Here a chemical reaction between the oxygen in the air and the hydrogen takes place creating electricity. When you put your foot down on the pedal this electricity is used to power the electric engine that moves the Mirai down the road. In the end the only thing left behind is pure water that drains out of the tailpipe, making the hydrogen fuel cell powered Toyota Mirai one of the most eco-friendly vehicles in the world.
